The must-hear rap song of the day

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Dusty Locane - “Rolando (Caught in the Rain)”

Pop Smoke’s influence on Dusty Locane isn’t subtle. Dusty reps the same neighborhood and has a rumbling voice that could be picked up on a seismograph. If “Rolando (Caught in the Rain)” wasn’t so good I would probably be ready to write Dusty off as an imitator, but the catchiness is undeniable. The Basso Beatz production, which samples the sweet-sounding voice of Fousheé (like Sleepy Hallow’s “Deep End” did before), is one of the best Brooklyn drill beats to date. I’m ready to give Dusty the benefit of the doubt since he only has three official songs so far, and it took Pop a similar amount of time to move beyond the heavy inspiration Sheff G had on his music. The same thing could happen to Dusty as he becomes more comfortable, but the shadow he’s trying to escape is enormous.
